Raising Mixed Race Kids Event (co-hosting with Greenwood, Adams, & Loyal Heights)
Tuesday, October 22, 2019, 06:00pm
Please join the PTAs of Greenwood, Loyal Heights, Adams and B. F. Day as we co-host a workshop, “Raising Mixed Kids: Multiracial Identity & Development” with Sharon H. Chang.
About 50 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia struck down all state laws banning interracial marriages. In 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau first allowed individuals to choose more than one race when filling out their census form. Since then, the multiracial population has grown significantly. While we are seeing the increased use of multiracial bodies in advertising and media, we are not seeing an authentic representation of multiracial stories and lived lives. Mixed race children are still the least represented in children’s literature. Together we will learn about the experiences of those who identify as mixed race and how we can support the children in our community as they develop a positive mixed race identity. All families are welcome.
6pm: Dinner and socializing, 6:30-8:30: Workshop.
