Thursday Chess Club K-5 Winter 2019

Thursday Chess Club K-5

Grades K-5 Thursdays 2:25-3:30 Staff Lounge

Chess is part of a healthy lifestyle, a fun social activity, and the most popular board game in history!  Playing chess improves memory, concentration, IQ, foresight, math skills, reading skills, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Grade K-5 students learn to play chess or improve their game. Students practice chess every week, including puzzles, challenges, and one-on-one play.  No prior chess experience is necessary.  All are welcome!  "Coach Ray" sends weekly emails to parents with club news.  Extracurricular chess tournament play is optional but encouraged in order to motivate individual players and promote the BF Day Chess Team! Kindergarteners must bring an adult (parent/guardian) with them at all times in order to help the Kindergartener focus, play with others, and take notes. Grades 2-5 should bring a chess notebook to all club meetings. Parents, please pack snacks for your students in case they are hungry. Chess Club will learn Chess Tactics in Winter 2019, including pins, skewers, forks, double attacks, discovered attacks, overloading, removing the guard, and more. Students also requested a "speed chess" tournament, where each player has ten minutes or less to finish the game!  Double Deal: When students register for both Thursday and Friday Chess Clubs K-5, then they receive a twenty percent (20%) discount for both days, costing $240 total.

Cost: $150 for 10 weeks - 1/24 to 4/4 (no classes 2/21)
