Parent/Caregiver Checklist

There’s a lot to take in at the start of the year, so here are a few quick ways to get connected and set yourself and your child up for success in these first weeks

  1. Subscribe to the SPS and B.F. Day calendars, which includes PTSA events
  2. Join the B.F. Day WhatsApp group to connect with other families
  3. Sign up for Class Communications from Room Parents and the PTSA. You do need to sign up each yar to opt in – teachers can’t share your contact information.
  4. Join the PTSA to become a member and vote
  5. Pay for school supplies – B.F. Day purchases school supplies in bulk so every student has exactly what they need from day one. Instead of bringing in supplies, we ask families to contribute $40–60 per student by September 8 to help cover the cost. You only need to provide a water bottle and backpack for your child
  6. Transportation/Busing: Eligible families should receive route assignments in late August. Contact SPS Transportation directly if you haven’t received information by August 28 or need to request an after‑school stop such as  Boys & Girls Club.
  7. Beginning in Fall 2026, every SPS student can receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Please watch for more information to come.
  8. Get a sharpie and mark your child’s belongings, especially coats, lunchboxes and water bottles with their name.
  9. Complete the SPS Volunteer application so you are eligible to volunteer.

How to Get Involved at B.F. Day

You can submit a PTSA Volunteer Form to share your interest, talents, and availability and be connected with matching opportunities and resources.

To volunteer in-person at school or on field trips, you’ll need to complete the process to become an official SPS volunteer. To access the application, please connect with your student’s teacher so they can send you an invitation link to the application. Please do this as soon as possible, because processing can take 4 to 6 weeks. For more information, click here.

In Your Child’s Classroom: Room Parents help build a sense of community around your child’s teacher and classroom. Some classes also need reading and math support.

From Home, by supporting event planning, communications and website updates, community outreach, and data entry projects.

Around B.F. Day: Volunteers in the lunchroom or on the playground can make a huge difference early in the school year as students and staff are settling into routines.

Supporting School & PTSA Events, like Winter Wonderland, Science Fair, Art Fest, Move-A-Thon, Spring Fling, and Field Day with planning, set-up, or clean-up.
